The first Band of Samos was founded under Governor Kopasis, with
the Italian Del Buono as its conductor. The next conductor of the band
was Kyriakos Moramvas. After the joining of Samos to the Greek State,
the members of the Band were granted the privilege of being exempt from
military service. Therefore, when World War I was declared (1914), a
Military Band of Samos Guard was formed with band conductor Panayiotidis
from Karlovasi.
The next Band of Samos was created in 1922 with Georgios Palamaris as
its conductor. After his death, the Italian Niccola Martino took it on
till 1935, when the band was renamed as Band Society of Samos. Following
that, there was the Municipal Band conducted by Yiannis Koutroulis,
which was dissolved during World War II.
In 1945 Stefanos Katsikakis creates a new Band, which he conducted till
1975. Further on, Georgios Pothas took it on, who taught young children
and is running the Municipal band till today. In spite of all the
problems he encountered, thanks to his artistry and the unreserved
support of the Municipal Authorities, he managed to create for the
Municipality one of the best bands of the Aegean. The band is composed
by 30 persons while there are also 15 beginners practicing. The 30
members of the band appear in all the religious, commemorative and
cultural events and in national anniversaries. The band has performed in
the past in various islands such as Rhodes, Kos, Leros and many others.
